Letter Writing Tips 

Writing your own letters to politicians who have the power to end live exports is one of the most effective things that each of us can do to help bring about an end to the attrocities of live exports. Follow these simple tips to ensure your letters are as effective as possible!

Letters to Ministers or Opposition Spokespersons asking them to halt the live animal export trade:

Live animal export is a Federal issue. The most important statement that you can make when communicating with politicians is that you will not support their party if they continue to support the live animal export industry. Currently only the Greens and the Democrats have policies opposing live export.

Writing letters to politicians is incredibly important as they count letters that they receive on any particular issue and have to respond.  Similarly a personal letter is given greater weight by politicians that receiving a printed form letter.

Below are some of the main points you may want to include in your letter. However – even a simple two sentence letter stating that you oppose live export and won’t support the Labour government if they allow it to continue – is equally effective:

• Recent FOI revelations have revealed that exporters are breaching the Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock resulting in the suffering and deaths of thousands of animals.
• The inability of exporters to comply with standards such as ensuring all injured and sick animals are identified, treated and euthanized if necessary means that the trade should be halted immediately on legal grounds.
• The horrendous cruelty inflicted on the animals when they arrive at their destination countries.
• That people in the Middle East believe that Australians approve of their cruel treatment of animals by our willingness to export them to the region.  
• No amount of profit makes this trade justifiable. There is a viable and profitable alternative to live export, illustrated by the fact that Australia’s chilled meat trade to the region is already worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and growing significantly each year.
• You will not be supporting that party if they continue to support the live export trade.
