Chilled Meat (Halal) vs Live Trade to Egypt - 2005/2006

Australia’s chilled and frozen meat exports to Egypt are worth more than live exports to that country and are continuing to grow in output and economic value.

The following export statistics are sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics
(obtained in January 2007)
, and are for 23 months from January 2005 - November 2006.

Sheep Exports

Value of sheep meat exports from Australia to Egypt

2005
$2.6 million approx
2006
$3.5 million approx (January – November)

Note: December 2005 was the second most profitable month for sheep meat export to Egypt, being worth almost $400,000, so the final 2006 figure may be substantially higher than the 11 month figure, i.e. perhaps $4million.

Value of live sheep exports from Australia to Egypt

2005
$1.8 million approx (26,000 sheep sent to Egypt)
2006
$2.8 million approx (40,000 sheep arrived on Maysora in November 2006)

Australian chilled/frozen halal sheep meat is therefore worth considerably more than the live export trade to Egypt already and is growing substantially.

Furthermore, the 1,000 tonnes of sheep meat sent to Egypt in the first 11 months of 2006 represents approximately 52,850 sheep killed and processed in Australia (based on a ‘live sheep equivalent’ of 21kg/animal).

Beef Exports

Value of beef meat exports from Australia to Egypt

2005-6
(Jan 05-Nov 06)
$162 million (170 tonnes – up from 62 tonnes to approx 108 tonnes Jan/Nov 06)

Value of live cattle exports from Australia to Egypt

2005 $3.5 - $7 million approx (based on export of between 6,961 and 14,091 cattle – various estimates @ average of $500/head)

Exports of cattle to Egypt have been relatively low since around 2002:

2003 7,000 cattle exported live
2004 0 cattle exported live
2005 6,961 – 14,091 cattle exported live (various reports)
2006 0 cattle exported live (due to the suspension of the trade on welfare grounds)
.
